New Year's Eve brings the annual anticipation of celebrating a new year and remembering the previous year. 2021 was year of improvement during the pandemic but offered many bad times but local churches are finding ways to cross over and celebrate a new beginning by conducting Watch Night Services. The pandemic has caused churches to be more creative in delivering watch night services to congregants virtually since the new Omicron variant has emerged and soared.

Watch Night, also called Freedom’s Eve, Christian religious service held on New Year’s Eve and associated, in many African American churches, with a celebration and remembrance of the Emancipation Proclamation (enacted January 1, 1863), which freed slaves in the Confederate states during the American Civil War. Many mainline Protestant churches in the United States sponsor a Watch Night service on New Year’s Eve.

Normally, church services on Watch Night generally begin sometime between 7:00 and 10:00 PM and end at midnight. The services are usually to be attended by family groups. Many attendees go on to New Year’s Eve parties afterward. But this year will be different due to the ongoing pandemic. Many people will watch live on their phones, laptops, and devices are celebrate God in the new year of 2022.
