As the Tuscaloosa Police Department continues to go on the offensive to combat violent crime in the city, officers have taken 40 guns off the streets since April 27th, a TPD spokesperson announced Thursday.

A top priority for the newly inaugurated Chief Brent Blankley is to aggressively reduce violent crime in Tuscaloosa.

In the last two months, TPD has conducted two large-scale raids in high-crime areas and arrested more than 50 people on drug and gun charges.

The department has also seized 40 firearms, including four that have been confirmed as stolen from homes and vehicles in the area.

The weapons depicted in photos released by the department include handguns of various calibers and several semi-automatic carbines.

The spokesperson said several people have been arrested and charged with multiple gun crimes, including Carrying a Concealed Weapon Without a Permit, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Receiving Stolen Property. More charges may be pending.

"Tuscaloosa Police officers will continue these measures in an effort to make the streets of Tuscaloosa safer for everyone in the community," the spokesperson said in a release.
