Over 30 people have been treated for Lyme Disease at DCH Regional Medical and the State Department of Health submitted letters to health care providers warning them seven counties were facing an 'endemic'. Other affected counties include Calhoun, Chambers, Jefferson, Mobile, Shelby, and Russell.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include chills, fever, headache, joint and muscle pain and stiff neck. Misdiagnosis is common because the symptoms often mimic a number of other illnesses.

The founder of Alabama Lyme Disease, Kevin Wolf, told WTVM that the State Department of Health's warning was a step in the wright direction. He said the disease is more common than you think.

"I think this is the first major hurdle we have to get over is for physicians to understand that it's a problem here and not to blow over an obvious case of Lyme disease just based on the misconception that we don't have it here,” Wolfe said.
