A pillar of the Tuscaloosa community and Tuscaloosa educator and pastor Clarence Sutton Sr. has died at the age of 76.

Pastor Sutton served as a principal in the early days of Central High School and was appointed the Tuscaloosa City Schools Board District 1 when James Minyard died back in 2015. Sutton did not run for another term in 2017.

Pastor Sutton founded the Christian Community Church in Tuscaloosa in the late 1970s and passed the baton to his son Dr. Clarence Sutton, Jr. to pastor the church as of recently. In addition, he was the former president of the Tuscaloosa County Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Pastor Sutton's wife, Gwendolyn, was also a teacher, and his son followed in his father's footsteps served as principal of Central High School starting in 2006 in the Tuscaloosa City School system as well.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
