Kids Say the Darndest Things: Jireh and What The….
While social media has created an epidemic of over sharing, it has also allowed us to share in some of the funnier experiences in life. Many of us enjoy reading about and watching videos of children saying and doing funny things.
I'm never short on things said by my daughter. This one happened this weekend. Jireh saw me carrying a large box, and the following exchange happened.
Jireh: What the.... (one-second pause) WHAT?
Me: (Still moving and trying to look around the box. Because I can't see her, I'm trying to make sure I don't run into her.)
Jireh: I almost said something else.
Me: (I've put down the box.) What were you going to say, "Heck?"
Jireh: Can I say that Mommy?
Me: Yeah. I thought you were going to say something else.
Jireh: What?
Me: Never mind.
Jireh: *fighting back a smile* You thought I was going to say the other "H" word?
Me: That's what I was wondering, but you didn't. So, it's ok.
I walk off, but I'm still within earshot. My niece, who is 5 months younger than Jireh is curious. They don't see me a few feet away in the hall.
Brielle: What is the other "H" word, Jireh?
Jireh: I can't tell you.
Brielle: Just tell me, Jireh. I'm not going to tell anybody.
Jireh: No, my mommy said I can't say it.
Brielle: Please, Jireh, I just want to know.
Jireh: Don't worry about it. You'll know when you get older.
I burst out laughing!
I'm so proud of Jireh and her ability to combat peer pressure. I often overhear her telling other children, "No, don't do that. My mommy said...." or "Stop being mean to...." rather than joining in. Now, I'm sure she has her moments where she's the troublemaker, but it's rarely because she's joining in with someone else. If she's mean to someone, it's because she's in her own bad mood.
But hearing Jireh tell her cousin that she'll know something when she gets older almost wiped me out. I'm happy I'd already put down the box I was carrying. Otherwise, I might have dropped it.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with such a story. Feel free to share yours in the comments section below.
