Keeping A Clear Conscience . . .
Keeping A Clear Conscience . . .
The commands of God are actually given to the life of His Son in each of us. Consequently, to our human nature in which God's Son has been formed (Galatians 4:19), His commands are difficult. However, they become divinely easy once we obey. Conscience is that ability within each of us that attaches itself to the highest standard we know, and then continually reminds us of what that standard demands that we do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either to God or to what we regard as the highest standard. Therefore we find that conscience is different in different people. If we are in the habit of continually holding God's standard in front of us, our conscience will always direct us to God's perfect law and indicate what we should do. The bottom line question is, will we obey? We must make an effort to keep our conscience so sensitive that we can live without any offense toward anyone. We should be living to such perfect harmony with God's Son that the spirit of our mind is being renewed through every circumstance of life, and that we may be able to quickly "prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2; also see Ephesians 4:23).
God will always instruct us down to the very last detail. Is our ear sensitive enough to hear even the softest whisper of the Spirit, so that we know what we should do?"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God ..." (Ephesians 4:30). God does not speak with a voice like thunder, His voice is so gentle that it is very easy for us to ignore. The only thing that keeps our conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of allowing ourselves to be open to God on the inside. When we begin to debate, stop. Don't ask, "Why can I not do this?" You are on the wrong track. There is no debating possible once your conscience speaks. Whatever it is, drop it, and make sure that you keep your inner vision clear.
