Alabama (yes, the entire State) is under either an extreme or major heat risk. Closer to home, the extreme heat risk area does include West Alabama.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said an extreme heat risk is rare and/or involves “long-duration extreme heat with little to no overnight relief, which affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.”

In addition, the NWS warns that “for people without effective cooling, this level of heat can be deadly.”

Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued an EXTREME HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT through Monday, August 17 at 9 p.m.

Residents should stay weather-aware because heat index values could reach 113 °F.

Precautionary & Preparedness Actions from the NWS

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing when possible, and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.  Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
