Recently, the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA announced they are bringing a G-League team to the Magic City.

Now, the team officially has a name. According to NBA.com, instead of being called the Bayhawks as the were called in Pennsylvania, they instead will taking the court as the Birmingham Squadron.

David Lane, the general manager of business operations discussed the name selection. "The ‘Birmingham Squadron’ is more than just a team name; it is a brand and identity rooted in the passionate pursuit of bringing sustained success to the Pelicans...From the 99th Pursuit Squadron – the first all-Black flying squadron in the Air Force – to the city of Birmingham’s production of planes during WWII, the state of Alabama has played a significant role in our nation’s military history, and we felt it was important to highlight that in the Birmingham Squadron brand."

This is the first time any NBA team will have affiliation with the city of Birmingham, and it also ends a drought of 15 years with no professional basketball in Birmingham.

The team play their games in the Legacy Arena, which as of writing, is still undergoing renovations which will reach completion at the end of 2021 in December.

Lane once again spoke on the excitement of having the team in Legacy Arena. "We’re looking forward to the arena being the best in the G League and even rivaling some NBA arenas. We couldn’t ask for a better venue for our fans, and we can’t wait to bring the experience of live professional basketball to the people of Birmingham like they’ve never seen before."
