The City of Tuscaloosa has made great progress in the last decade in terms of beautification and structural enhancements.

This means some properties have been demolished while others have received face lifts. However, there is one property in Tuscaloosa that is now made harder to be altered: The Alabama Book Store!

According to the Associated Press, the Alabama Book Store is being added to the National Register of Historic Places.  The store has been open on the Strip since 1942 and joins the estimated 1,250 locations in the state which have been noted as being worth historic preservation.

The National Park Service says that almost every county in the United States has at least one place listed on the National Register.

To be included on the National Register, the location should be presented to the State Historic Preservation Office, Federal Preservation Office, or Tribal Preservation Office and must meet the National Register Criteria for Evaluation, which includes the following:

  • Property’s age
  • Significance
  • Integrity
