Severe Storms, Tornadoes Possible in West Alabama Today and Tonight
Severe storms are in the forecast for West Alabama; we could see damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes as a cold front makes its way across the state this afternoon and through the night.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has placed most of our listening area under an elevated risk for today's storms; while tornadoes could develop anywhere across Alabama today, conditions in the elevated risk area are more favorable for tornadic activity. Damaging winds of up to 70 MPH are possible as well as quarter size hail.
ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann currently projects storms to impact Alabama,a between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Some storms may develop before 4 p.m., but the greatest window for severe weather will be in the afternoon and evening hours. Be sure you and your family have a way to receive the latest warnings--especially overnight.
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for much of the state until late Friday night; we could see up to two inches of rain. This could create flooding issues and dangerous driving conditions.
