Tuscaloosa NAACP to Host Its First-Ever Juneteenth Weekend Celebration

The Tuscaloosa Branch of the NAACP will host a parade, picnic and much more in a series of events in West Tuscaloosa to commemorate the Juneteenth holiday this weekend.

In a press release from the organization, the local chapter said they will begin the event series on Thursday with a Financial Literacy and Homebuying Seminar at the McDonald Hughes Center in West Tuscaloosa from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

According to the release, the session will "provide participants with the tools to equip them to make sound financial decisions and provide information on building generational wealth" and will cover aspects of homeownership. This event is free to the public.

A "Youth and Senior Forum" will take place on Friday at Shelton State's C.A. Fredd's Campus from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. to discuss issues that negatively impact youth and young adults in the Black community. Various agencies from West Alabama will present resources and services for seniors.

The Juneteenth Parade and Cookout in the Park will take place on Saturday. The parade will begin at Westlawn Middle School and end at Plum Grove Baptist Church with the line-up starting at 9:50 a.m.

The Juneteenth Family Community Cookout in the Park will follow the parade at Palmore Park and will feature recording artist Nathaniel Kimble and entertainment from other local artists. Food trucks will be on site and guests will be allowed to bring their grills, cooler and tents.

The event series will conclude with the NAACP Juneteenth “Living Legend” Luncheon on Monday, June 20 at Shelton State's C.A. Fredd's Campus and will feature Tuscaloosa's own Mrs. Yvonne Wells as the guest speaker. Tickets for the event are $55.
