An investment group is looking to bring live greyhound dog racing and the jobs, visitors and revenue that come with it back to Greene County, Alabama as soon as next year.

A group called Pro Greyhound Racing Investors announced this week that they are in the early stages of a multi-million-dollar investment plan to rejuvenate the iconic Greenetrack Greyhound Track and Casino.

Since live races ended at the Birmingham Race Course in 2020, there have been no operational dog racing tracks in Alabama, one of just seven states where the practice is still legal. Dogs have not run at Greenetrack since the late 1990s.

After the races ended there, Greenetrack pivoted to a lucrative electronic bingo model but the Eutaw facility closed last year after decades of legal battles with the state over how games were conducted there. The gaming center reopened under new management in May as Greene County Entertainment.

Mac Davis, the head of the investment group, said they want to spend millions on upgrading the Greenetrack facility, including installing a new racetrack, enhancing the spectator experience, "new gaming additions" and resuming live dog racing as soon as Spring 2025.

Davis said revitalizing and reopening the track will not affect Greene County Entertainment, who will retain the lease of what he called "the casino property."

He said the entities two might partner in the future, but those details have not been agreed upon.

Davis said the investment group wants to upgrade the racing surface around the track and improve other facilities to ensure the greyhounds' safety. He also said they want to enhance the betting experience with new table games and digital features complemented by promotions to engage and entertain visitors.

Davis said the group would also guarantee adoption for retired racing greyhounds and employ top veterinarians to care for them.

“Bringing greyhound racing back to the city of Eutaw and mainly Greene County will not only create the premier destination for greyhound racing in the United States but will also prove to be a viable asset for the community giving jobs for residents in the area and growing the overall GDP of the city and county," Davis said in a release.

He said the development team is working closely with local stakeholders and regulatory bodies to ensure legal operation and more news will come soon.

Davis said anyone looking for more information about the investment plan can contact him at macdavisgreyhounds@gmail.co. Stay connected to the Tuscaloosa Thread for updates on this proposed project as they become available.
