Tuscaloosa Events Highlight Black Maternal Health Week
A powerful week of conversations, storytelling, and community engagement is coming to Tuscaloosa, all centered around one mission, improving outcomes for Black mothers.
WAWC Healthcare is leading a series of events for Black Maternal Health Week, happening April 11 through April 17, bringing together community voices, healthcare professionals, and advocates.

This year’s theme, “Rooted in Justice and Joy,” focuses on uplifting Black mothers while creating space for real dialogue around their experiences and the disparities that still exist in maternal healthcare, according to the press release.
The week includes a mix of in-person and virtual events designed to educate, connect, and spark change.
It all kicks off April 13 with a film screening at Stillman College, featuring *Bone Black: Midwives vs. the South*, followed by community engagement.
From there, the conversation continues online with a virtual discussion on April 15 centered on lived experiences, and another on April 16 breaking down myths and policies impacting maternal health.
The week wraps with a community-driven storytelling campaign on April 17, encouraging people to share their own reflections and messages in support of Black mothers across social media.
Why Does This Matter?
Because the numbers still tell a tough story. Black women in the United States continue to face significantly higher rates of maternal health complications and mortality.
“Centering Black mothers means listening, uplifting, and investing in their care, stories, and outcomes,” said Crystina Hughes, according to the press release. “This week is about creating space for truth, healing, and change.”
This week isn’t just about awareness, it’s about action, conversation, and building a healthier future for families right here in West Alabama.
