Theatre Tuscaloosa is getting a major upgrade, and it’s one that audiences will definitely notice.

The local theater company has been awarded a $40,000 Creative Places Art Facilities grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts to improve lighting inside the Bean-Brown Theatre.

According to the press release from Shelton State,  the funding will help Theatre Tuscaloosa move into phase two of a three-phase transition to LED theatrical lighting. The upgrade is designed to enhance production quality while making performances more dynamic and immersive for audiences.

Executive Producer Michael Walker says the investment goes beyond just new equipment.

“Our high-quality theatrical experiences invite audiences to connect more deeply with the magic of live theatre,” Walker said according to the press release. “The lighting upgrades mark an exciting new chapter, allowing us to better utilize our space and continue building toward the future.”

The Alabama State Council on the Arts, which supports creative programs across the state, funded the grant through a combination of state appropriations and support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Theatre Tuscaloosa says the improvements align with its mission to bring high-level productions and educational programs to West Alabama while strengthening the region’s arts and culture scene.

The timing of the upgrade also lines up with one of the theater’s biggest upcoming shows. “Big Fish” is set to run July 17 through July 26 inside the Bean-Brown Theatre. Tickets go on sale June 10 for flex-ticket holders and June 17 for the general public.
