Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones made his 50th NFL career start on Sunday and his first career start as a San Fransisco 49er. He filled in after starting quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a turf toe variant and a shoulder injury in Week 1; Purdy is expected to be out two to five weeks.

Jones began his NFL career with the New England Patriots after being selected No. 15 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jones won the starting job in his rookie season and was the first Patriots rookie quarterback to start a season opener since Drew Bledsoe in 1993.

Jones was a starter for the Patriots for three seasons but was benched in Week 10 against the Indianapolis Colts in the 2023 season after a decline in his performance.

During his tenure with the Patriots, Jones accumulated 10,590 passing yards, 54 passing touchdowns, and 44 interceptions on a 65.9% completion rate. Additionally, he rushed for 327 yards and had a career passer rating of 84.9 while with the team. The Patriots had a 18-24 record with Jones as the starting quarterback.

After the 2023 season, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars and served as a backup to starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the 2024 season. He made his starting debut as a Jaguar in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings after Lawrence  suffered a concussion and battled with a joint injury. During those seven weeks as a starter, Jones went 2-5.

After the season ended, the Jaguars released Jones. He then signed as a free agent with the 49ers, agreeing to a two-year contract with the 49ers to back up Purdy.

In Week 2 of the 2025 season, Jones was listed as the starter for the 49ers. Jones had a solid performance that sent shockwaves through the media. Jones led the 49ers to a narrow 26-21 win over the New Orleans Saints, looking poised and confident in his debut.

Jones completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Jones will likely play in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals, as Purdy is still a week-to-week decision.
