Concerns over the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have led the Merchants of Historic Downtown Northport to vote to cancel the 2020 Dickens Downtown Christmas celebration, the group announced on social media Wednesday afternoon.

The annual victorian holiday celebration generally takes place the first week of December on 5th Street in downtown Northport. Carollers sing songs, artificial snow fills the air and actors play out scenes from Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

Unfortunately, it will not be so this year.

In a post shared to Facebook, the collective of business owners said their small storefronts would be unable to safely handle the thousands of people who attend Dickens Downtown each year.

The entrepreneurs asked that the community continue to shop local and support them in these unprecedented times.
