Alabama Eclipses 4,000 COVID-19 Cases, Health Care Workers & Nursing Homes Hit Hard

Confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Alabama surpassed 4,000 Wednesday, and more than a quarter of those infected are health care workers or either work at or reside in nursing homes.

Data from the Alabama Department of Public Health shows that 4,075 confirmed cases of the virus in the state as of Wednesday afternoon.

653 of those infected were workers in Alabama's hospitals or doctors' offices. 197 were nursing home employees and 225 were nursing home residents.

There are now confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in all of Alabama's 67 counties and 10 counties have more than 100 cases. They are as follows:

Jefferson County: 625 cases

Mobile County: 548 cases

Lee County: 269 cases

Shelby County: 237 cases

Chambers County: 221 cases

Madison County: 191 cases

Montgomery County: 174 cases

Tuscaloosa County: 128 cases

Tallapoosa County: 127 cases

Marshall County: 106 cases

More than 34,000 people have been tested for the virus in Alabama, and 118 have reportedly died from it, although the ADPH has only officially confirmed 75 of those deaths as caused by COVID-19.

219 people are being treated in intensive care units as of Wednesday, and 134 are on ventilators.
