Alabama Delays Opening Spring Practice
Alabama will not be holding spring practice today amid concern over the spread of COVID-19. Nick Saban was slated to open up spring football practice today for one practice before sending the team off for Spring Break. The Crimson Tide football team follows the procedure set by the NBA, the NCAA, NHL and other major organizations by deciding to postpone athletic activity.
The University of Alabama decided yesterday to extend Spring Break to March 30, adding on an additional 10 days. Saban had not given any indication that cancelling the first spring football practice was a possibility but had also not confirmed it was going to take place. It was merely reported yesterday that no decision had been made at the time. A few hours before the practice was to get underway Saban decided it was not worth the risk.
The NCAA also mandated an in-person recruiting dead period until April 15. No on-campus or in-home visits will take place while the dead period is in place. Coaches are still allowed to make phone-calls and send text messages to recruits during the dead period.
Alabama is still planning on holding the A Day spring game on April 18 at this time. Due to construction at Bryant-Denny Stadium the university announced there would be limited seated available to fans for the event. It remains to be seen if that plan has been changed or altered.
