It was a war of attrition at Central High School on Friday night, but it was the road team which came away with the victory.

The Woodlawn Colonels outlasted the Central Falcons, 22-7, in a game where flags flew and footballs hit the turf a dime a dozen. It was competitive throughout and was 0-0 after one quarter.

Neither team could establish the run game in the first half. The key moment of quarter number one was when the team's No. 3 jerseys traded interceptions in successive plays. First, Woodlawn's Asher Hawkins snagged one, then Central's Kameron Oliver got the ball right back.

The two teams had more incompletions combined than meaningful pass plays in the first half.

Hawkins scored twice on the offensive side of the ball, including the breakthrough 9-yard carry for the first score of the ball game. 8-0 was the score heading into the break.

Central pulled within a possession with a punt return touchdown following the first series of the half. Jarell Hodges created space and outran the Colonels to get the home team on the board.

A pivotal moment came in the fourth quarter. With Central fighting to get out of the shadow of its own goal line, the Falcons lost a fumble. Woodlawn set up shop on the Falcon 3-yard line and scored on first down, adding the 2-point conversion to stretch the lead to two possessions. Zane Scroggins added that score.

The final touchdown came on a third down when Hawkins ran it in again. Central failed to have an offensive series not resulting in a punt or turnover. The defensive leader in the game for Central was Dominic Myles, who had a pick and a key pass deflection on fourth down.

The Falcons recorded a dubious six turnovers in the contest. The one time they reached the red zone, they lost a fumble.

There were 27 flags thrown in the game.

"I think we need to get back to the basics," said Central offensive coordinator Corey Waldon. "We're beating ourselves with turnovers, mistakes."

"We didn't quit," he added. "Anytime you've got guys that continue to fight hard, good things are eventually gonna happen."

"[The defense] played phenomenal football," Woodlawn head coach Gentrell Eatman said. "They played lights out. I told the DC coming into the year, 'I gotta depend on them for at least the first half of the season.'"

"It's good to have tough games to let you know the kids have some fight... we're a blue collar team. Everything we get, we have to grind and go scrap for."

Woodlawn moved to 2-0 on the season, while Central fell to 0-2. The Falcons will host Paul W. Bryant High School next Friday to open region play.
