Nurse Valerie Alford joined the Steve Shannon Morning Show Wednesday to share the remarkable, emotional story of a true hero -- her late husband, Jerry Alford.

Jerry was a nurse at Tuscaloosa's DCH Regional Medical Center who contracted COVID-19 and passed away from complications of the virus on April 22, 2020. Jerry was also a former Recon Marine Sniper and a father of three.

"He was larger than life and he gave everything to nursing," Valerie Alford said. "He loved surgery, he loved the operating room. There was nothing that he couldn't scrub and he never backed down from a case. When somebody didn't want to do it, he would step up."

Valerie Alford said her life was turned upside down when Jerry, her husband of 27 years, was suddenly taken from her and the rest of her family. At the same time, their oldest son Jack has been hospitalized in Birmingham for a little more than a month battling leukemia.

We at Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa are saluting Jerry, Valerie, and the hundreds of other heroic health care workers around West Alabama during National Nurses Week, which is observed from May 6th until May 12th.
