New Year's Eve brings the annual anticipation of celebrating a new year and remembering the previous year. 2024 was year of loss and victory but local churches are finding ways to cross over and celebrate a new beginning by conducting Watch Night Services. The pandemic 4 years ago has caused churches to be more creative in delivering watch night services to congregants virtually as well as in person.

Watch Night, also called Freedom’s Eve, Christian religious service held on New Year’s Eve and associated, in many African American churches, with a celebration and remembrance of the Emancipation Proclamation (enacted January 1, 1863), which freed slaves in the Confederate states during the American Civil War. Many mainline Protestant churches in the United States sponsor a Watch Night service on New Year’s Eve.

Normally, church services on Watch Night generally begin sometime between 7:00 and 10:00 PM and end at midnight with many attending in person services. The services are usually to be attended by family groups and those wanting to get more of God in 2025. Many attendees go on to New Year’s Eve parties afterward. Many people will watch live on their phones, laptops, and devices are celebrate God in the new year of 2025.
