Tua Tagovailoa Confirmed OUT for Week 3 in the NFL
The Miami Dolphins will be without their starting QB for an extended period of time. It was announced Wednesday that Tua will be out for unknown amount of time as he has fractured ribs, confirmed by head coach Brian Flores in a press conference. Jacoby Brisset, the lone backup QB on the roster, will start.
Head Coach Brian Flores said while he was hopeful for Tua to start, he also understands taking step by step is the best course of action.
"We're just going to take it week-to-week, let's call it day-to-day" Flores continued "This is a tough kid, he wants to play, he's actually trying to play, and we're just going to save himself from this and hold him out this week and take it week to week from there."
Flores also expressed sadness with Tua's injury.
"You don't want this, nobody wants this." Flores said "Not ideal, but we'll move forward with the guys we have."
Tua's injury occurred in the first quarter with 10:41 remaining. Tua was slow to get up after being sacked on fourth down. The second year quarterback was also carted off the field.
Tua's issues with the injury bug are well known. In 2019, he missed a few games due to a high ankle sprain, and suffered a hip dislocation while being sacked against Mississippi State. During his time in the NFL, he has missed a game due to a jammed thumb.
The timetable for when Tua will return is unknown. The earliest Tua could return would be Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Depending on how he heals and how the medical staff observe however, the latest he could return would be week 9 against the Houston Texans.
