Toys for Miners is getting ready for the holiday season--they're collecting donations and registering families in need of assistance at a special event at the Lakeview Police Department Saturday, November 14, 2015.

Toys for Miners was founded following the recent layoffs by Jim Walter Resources. Their mission is to provide assistance to miners who have been laid off from their jobs. Toys for Miners is collecting donations of toys, clothing, bicycles, and much more for these families and will distribute the items before Christmas. The group estimates that as many as 1,000 families have been impacted by the layoffs and is taking action to ensure these families have a merry and bright holiday season.

They're hosting a "Donation Drive By" event at the Lakeview Police Department Saturday. You'll be able to "drive by" the Lakeview Police Department (22757 Central Park Drive, Lakeview, Alabama) and drop off your donations with volunteers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Families in need of assistance will be able to register with Toys for Miners at this time as well. Miners affected by the layoffs need to register their families to receive gifts and/or items collected by Toys for Miners, and stopping by the event Saturday provides these families with an easy opportunity to do so. Toys for Miners will continue to register families in need of assistance; check out their Facebook page for more info.
