A palindrome, according to Webster’s Dictionary, is “a word, verse, or sentence (such as "Able was I ere I saw Elba") or a number (such as 1881) that reads the same backward or forward”. Today – 1/21/21 – is the last national palindrome day for 1,000 years! The next palindrome will take place on Jan. 21, 3021. To celebrate this momentous day, let’s take a look back at the historical events that happened in palindromes past.

On this day in palindromes past, two exciting events happened in both the sports and entertainment industries. Sammy Sosa, who was a right fielder for the Chicago Cubs at the time, made history as the first major leaguer to score a total of 60 home runs in three seasons.

Oct. 2, 2001 was also an exciting day for doctor “dramedy” lovers everywhere. The hit television series “Scrubs”, starring Zach Braff and Donald Faison, premiered on NBC.

Jan. 10, 2011 was another memorable day in sports history, but not so fun for both Alabama and Oregon fans. On this day in history, the Auburn Tigers beat the Oregon Ducks 22-19 during the 2011 BCS National Championship Game at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

This day was momentous was Marvel fans everywhere as “The Amazing Spider Man 2” – starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone – had its premier debut in London at the Odeon Leicester Square.

Space and the great beyond had a fantastic day on this past palindrome. NASA’s Juno spacecraft made its closest and most successful pass over the planet Jupiter’s Great Red Spot.

According to NASA’s website, “This will be humanity's first up-close and personal view of the gigantic feature – a storm monitored since 1830 and possibly existing for more than 350 years.”

One of this centuries’ most recent palindromes, apart from today, happened just yesterday! On this day in palindrome history, the United States celebrated its 46th inauguration ceremony. Joe Biden was sworn in as the country’s next president.

This was also a historic day for women and people of color as Kamala Harris, a woman of both Jamaican and Indian descent, became the first female Vice President in U.S. history.
