Every day, parents and students wonder if COVID-19 will affect the upcoming school year. While there is no clear answer for how – or whether – school will be in session come August, one thing is for certain: Tax-Free Weekend 2020 is still on.

At midnight on July 17 and running through the weekend to July 19, the state of Alabama will commence its annual tax-free shopping holiday. The event is designed to help parents purchase school supplies for their students, as a new school year is usually right around the corner. Here's the gist: shoppers will see no sales tax on their receipts if they are purchasing specific types of school supplies, technology and clothes.

Remember, wearing a mask in all Alabama stores is required under the new mask mandate, which was set in place by Gov. Kay Ivey on Wednesday. Read more about the mandate here.

Of course, there are certain limitations to these perks. For instance, while most clothing items are exempt this weekend, items like sunglasses, watches and wigs are not considered acceptable. For a full list of what you can and cannot buy tax-free this weekend, click here.

A hot item that is often overlooked during the back-to-school tax holiday is technology. Desktop computers, laptops, printers and many related accessories will also be free of tax this weekend. However, it's good to keep in mind that educationally-minded purchases will be the only ones considered for withholding tax. For example, you might not be as lucky purchasing a $1,000 gaming computer with accompanying games this weekend, though a $500 Chromebook and a couple of flash drives would be acceptable under the Alabama Department of Revenue's guidelines.

The next tax-free weekend will take place on February 26-28, 2021. Consumers will get a chance to shop for items that are useful during severe weather events like storms and tornadoes. Happy shopping!
