On a night featuring running clocks and shortened quarters, there were indeed some blowouts but also some nail biters in West Alabama high school football. Here’s a look at the scoreboard:
The Greenwave are now tied with Oakman in the region with a perfect 3-0 record. Gordo will hit the road next week to take on Pickens County in the annual "Eight Mile War".
The Gordo Greenwave (6-2, 4-1) pitching a shut-out for the second straight week defeated the Fayette County Tigers (4-4, 3-2) 27-0 to secure sole possession of second place in Class 4A Region 5.
Northside took advantage of good field position, steady running and strong defense to pull off the 14-12 upset of the state's No. 1 ranked team in Class 4A. The Ram's win tonight is just the second in school history over the Greenwave.
The Handley Tigers (12-1) out of Roanoke, Alabama defeated the Gordo Greenwave (13-2) 35-20 to win the AHSAA Class 4A State Championship. The Tigers defeated both tuscaloosa-area schools, American Christian Academy and Gordo, in consecutive weeks to win the championship in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Six weeks after having a plate and 13 screws inserted to help heal a broken collarbone, Tanner Bailey returned and led Gordo to a playoff win on Thursday night.
Bailey broke his collarbone on the Greenwave's final offensive play. Bailey had led his offense down to the 15-yard line and was attempting to orchestrate a go-ahead touchdown with 30-seconds left in the contest. The four-star quarterback rolled to his left, extending a play, but was sacked and fumbled. The Jaguars recovered the fumble and subsequently ended the game.
