In Week Seven of the Alabama High School Football season, the Gordo Greenwave, on homecoming night, destroyed the Fayette County Tigers by a score of 35-0.
This is Fayette County's first loss of the season after starting the year 6-1.
After holding the Greenwave to a three and out on the first drive of the game, Fayette County ran the ball right down Gordo's throat. After rushing for 61 yards and getting all the way down to the Greenwave 19, penalties ended the drive for the Tigers. On fourth and 29, the Tigers decided to go for it but quarterback Blake Johnson threw an incomplete pass.
With this crucial fourth down stop, Gordo responded with a rushing drive of their own. Gordo gained 63 yards on the ground with massive runs by Chrisjavion Lark and Kohl Summerville. But on the Tiger's three-yard line, it was quarterback Brax Garrison who ran it in to put the Greenwave up 7-0.
Gordo's defense then held Fayette County's offense to another turnover on downs which gave the Greenwave all the momentum. Just as the Greenwave were about to score another touchdown, Garrison threw an interception to Hollis Strawbridge which brought the Tigers back in the game.
Unfortunately for Fayette County, three plays later Johnson gave the ball right back to the Greenwave with an interception. Max Stephenson returned the interception all the way down to Tiger's 1-yard line. One play later, Garrison scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, putting the Greenwave up 14-0.
At halftime, the score stayed at 14-0 but in the second half, Gordo showed the full might of its team.
Gordo forced the Tigers to punt on their opening drive of the second half. Four plays later, Garrison found Willie Fonville on a 53-yard touchdown pass which put the Greenwave up 21-0.
Fayette County tried to respond but when the run game stopped working Johnson had to win the game with his arm and that did not go so well. With ten seconds left in the third quarter, Johnson threw his second interception of the night, this time to Ethan Wilder.
The Tigers held Gordo to a three-and-out, but on their next drive, they turned the ball over on downs. This gave Garrison and the Gordo offense prime field position to strengthen their lead. With 5:55 left in the game, Garrison rushed in from five yards out to put the Greenwave up 29-0.
The final score of the game came after Fayette County fumbled the ball on the kick return. Because of this, Lark ran it into the endzone, from 26 yards out, to put the Greenwave up 35-0.
"It was awesome tonight," said Gordo head coach Gus Smith. "I was expecting a way close game but our team came out to play. I promised the team chicken wings if we shut them out, I thought I was safe but the score says otherwise."
With this win, Gordo now improves to 7-1 going into Week eight of the season. Next week, the Greenwave travel on the road to face the Oakman Wildcats.
"We came in with a good game plan and we executed it pretty well on the first drive," says Fayette County head coach Jared Porter. "After that, we faced a little adversity and we got off our rhythm but it's a learning experience for us and we will learn from this."
The Tigers with this loss drop to 6-1 on the year. Next week, they return home and face the Winfield Pirates.
