Severe Weather: Where Can I Take Shelter in Tuscaloosa and Surrounding Areas?
As the state of Alabama generally sees tornadoes as its most common form of severe weather, shelters are often sought by travelers and those whose homes are either unsafe or not accessible at the time of inclement weather nor thereafter.
The Red Cross of West Alabama activates shelters on an as-needed basis AFTER a storm strikes. Therefore, the Red Cross should be called at (205) 758-3608 to gather shelter information. In addition, the following agencies may provide information on shelter locations:
Compassion Coalition -- (205) 349-2797
FEMA -- (800) 621-FEMA
The Salvation Army -- (205) 758-2804
United Way of West Alabama -- (205) 345-6640
(205) 345-7775 for info and referrals
America's Second Harvest -- (800) 344-8070
Christian Disaster Response -- (941) 956-5183 or (941) 551-9554
