Possibility of Severe Weather on New Year’s Eve in Alabama

We are just days away from a brand new year. This New Year’s Eve is a reason for us to celebrate making it through the 365 days of 2020 during a national pandemic. As exciting as it will be to bring in 2021, this New Year's Eve could bring us all severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service Birmingham, we have the potential for severe weather in our listening areas. “Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon through Thursday night across all of Central Alabama. Primary “threats include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph as well as a few tornadoes. Periods of showers and thunderstorms will lead to locally heavy rainfall at times. This could cause minor flooding of low lying or poor drainage areas. Outside of thunderstorm activity, wind gusts up to 35 mph are possible Thursday evening and Thursday night.”

As we get closer to Thursday, New Year’s Eve, the timing for this probable severe weather will become more apparent. Right now, it’s shaping up to be an afternoon, evening, and late-night hours event. The National Weather Service Birmingham has part of our listening areas in a marginal risk area and others in a slight risk area. At this time, the Slight Risk Area has the potential of “damaging winds up to 60 mph with tornadoes possible.” The Marginal Risk Area notes that the “threats mentioned above are less likely but cannot be completely ruled out.”
