Alabama Christians: When Evil Feels Too Much

There are times when the weight of the world feels crushing. Evil seems to surround us—headlines filled with violence, corruption, division, and loss. The chaos of our culture, the brokenness of humanity, and the pain of daily struggles can make it feel as though darkness has the upper hand. It’s easy to feel discouraged, even hopeless, when the shadows seem so thick.
But the truth of the gospel reminds us of something far greater: darkness never wins. The cross stands as eternal proof that God’s light will always overcome evil. What looked like defeat on Calvary became the greatest victory in history. Jesus’ resurrection assures us that sin, death, and despair do not have the final word.
When evil feels too much, we need to hold on to what is unshakable:
- God is still in control. No matter how chaotic things may appear, God has not left His throne. He works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Evil does not have the final say—God does.
- Prayer still changes things. Prayer is not powerless; it is the greatest weapon we have. When we cry out to God, He hears us, and He moves in ways seen and unseen.
- Do good even in darkness. Scripture reminds us to not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up (Galatians 6:9). Kindness, love, and righteousness push back against evil’s influence.
- Guard your heart. In times of turmoil, bitterness, fear, or hatred can creep in. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Protect your spirit by staying rooted in God’s truth.
- Hold onto the Word of God. His promises are an anchor when the storms of life rage. The Word gives light, direction, and hope in the darkest of times.
- Look to Jesus. He is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). By fixing our eyes on Him, we are reminded that victory is already won, and hope is never lost.
Evil may roar loudly, but its time is short. As followers of Christ, we can rest in the assurance that God is sovereign, His light still shines, and His truth will prevail. Even in the chaos, we can choose to trust, to do good, and to keep our eyes on Jesus.
Hope has already won.
