Tuscaloosa & Other West Alabama School Systems Announce Early Closures for Severe Weather
Schools across our coverage area in West Alabama are making the decision to dismiss classes early today, opting for a half-day instead as severe storms are forecast to arrive earlier than previously expected.
Threats include tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and hail up to quarter-size, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham. In addition, there is a risk of isolated to scattered occurrences of flash flooding tonight to early Thursday morning.
We will keep an updated list of schools in our coverage area that dismiss early or cancel activities on Wednesday - check back for additions to the list in real-time as they are announced.
TUSCALOOSA CITY SCHOOLS TO DISMISS AT HALF-DAY
TUSCLAOOSA COUNTY SCHOOLS TO DISMISS AT HALF-DAY
Due to the threat of severe weather this afternoon and evening, all Tuscaloosa County School System schools will dismiss at their half-day dismissal time on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. There will be no afterschool extended day or afterschool activities/events.
Individual schools will let students and families know their exact half-day dismissal time, as they vary slightly from school to school. Lunch will be served before students leave school, and bus transportation will run at half-day dismissal time.
The timing of today’s predicted severe weather is particularly concerning for school bus routes, as some routes take two hours to run. Predictions call for the possibility of high winds, severe storms and possible tornadoes during our regular dismissal time.
Thank you for your cooperation. Please stay safe and pay close attention to weather forecasts.
