Report: Wanted Suspect Shot by Moundville Police Tuesday, Expected to Survive
A wanted Hale County man is expected to survive after he was reportedly shot by a Moundville Police officer on Highway 69 in Tuscaloosa County late Tuesday night.
As first reported by the Moundville Times, the shooting reportedly happened when an Akron man was pulled over at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.
The driver was reportedly wanted by several law enforcement agencies, and a Moundville Police Officer fired on them during the traffic stop.
The Times reports that the officer was not seriously injured in the incident, and the driver was allegedly in stable condition Wednesday morning.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit will investigate the circumstances of the shooting, and per their protocol for officer-involved shootings, the detectives they use on the case will not have any connection to the Moundville Police.
In a Wednesday afternoon update, Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa VCU, explained the circumstances of the shooting.
"At approximately 10:00 p.m., a Moundville police officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle. The stop occurred on Highway 69 South within Tuscaloosa County. The driver was found to have outstanding warrants in Tuscaloosa and Hale Counties," Kennedy wrote. "The suspect exited the vehicle, and the officer attempted to take the suspect into custody. The suspect resisted and during the altercation, the officer deployed his Tazer twice and then discharged his firearm several times. The suspect was struck one time, re-entered his vehicle and fled the scene."
Since then, the driver has been located at a family member's residence and transported to a local hospital, where Kennedy said he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, the VCU is choosing not to identify the man who was shot, but said after he recovers enough to be charged with the warrants out against him, his name will be released.
