Highway 43 in Northport is closed to traffic after a four-vehicle accident left one person dead and three others injured, police said Wednesday afternoon.

Keith Carpenter, the assistant chief of the Northport Police Department, said a wreck involving four vehicles occurred at about 12:40 p.m. on Highway 43 near its intersection with Highway 171.

Carpenter said NPD officers are on the scene, and he could confirm one person is dead and three suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

Carpenter said Northport's Accident Reconstruction Unit is working the scene to determine how the wreck happened and in what order the vehicles were involved. Because of their ongoing investigation and the deadly nature of the accident, Caprenter said Highway 43 is closed to traffic and will be for at least two or three hours, meaning it could be Wednesday evening before cars are allowed to pass again.

There are local reroutes and diversions in place at the scene, but Carpenter advised motorists to avoid the area if possible and leave law enforcement room to work.
