The suspect, who was allegedly wanted in Ben Hill County, Georgia, on robbery charges, refused to stop and fled in his vehicle.

Flowers said officers pursued the vehicle on Highway 80, and the suspect began to shoot at police officers.

The chase led police through Uniontown, Alabama, and the suspect ran his vehicle off the road while continuing to fire at police.

Flowers said the driver exited the vehicle with a gun and was shot by responding police officers.

The suspect, who has not yet been publicly identified, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound and is in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

Flowers said medical personnel was notified immediately after the shooting, and that the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation will study the case to ensure the officers acted appropriately, which is standard protocol after any police shooting.
