Tuscaloosa City Schools, along with Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa and Child Abuse Prevention Services, will highlight and recognize Inspiring Excellence Student Of The Month from each of the 21 schools in the district during the 2023-2024 school year. Every month, two to three outstanding TCS students will be highlighted in this series.

Students and staff celebrated an 8th-grade natural-born leader earlier this month at Westlawn Middle School, where she was recognized as their 2023-2024 Inspiring Excellence Student of the Month.

Adrianna Mathis was described by her teachers as a dependable, star student who loves school and is invested in her community.

“She is always willing to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed,” Her teachers said. “She always serves as a role model for others.”

Mathis was shocked to hear her name called and said she was overwhelmed with pride for being chosen by her teachers.

“I always try to be a leader,” Mathis said. “I like asking my classmates if there is anything I can do to help them.”

Mathis said leadership was instilled into her at a young age by her aunts who were always willing to help her succeed academically and in character.

Mathis serves as an ambassador at Westlawn and is also involved with the Future Business Leaders of America. She said she dreams of being a doctor or teacher when she grows up.

“I just want to help people any way I can,” Mathis said.
