Whew! My Toddler Almost Burned Our Home Down In Tuscaloosa

As a homeowner, one of the most devastating things that could happen is your house catching fire.

So many memories, so much investment and most of all, the risk of loved ones or even yourself being caught in a blaze. Sadly, it almost happened to me this week.

One evening as my family is getting ready for bed, I told my wife, I walked into our bedroom, cut on the lights and said "I smell something burning."Alarms inside my head immediately went off as I started to pace the room and check for anything that may have been plugged in too long, smoke, or worst of all, flames.

Even though I had just cooked a full meal, I knew everything in the kitchen was off and the smell was coming from inside of our bedroom.

With there being 358,300 home-based fires every year, on average, my aim was to not become part of that statistic.

After my wife told me that she didn't smell anything, I trusted her, turned off the lights and went to sleep. Luckily, nothing happened that night and we woke up the next morning to begin the morning routine.

As I'm in the radio studio, my wife sends me a text that read, "I smell the burning smell in the room this morning!" Although I'm miles away, I'm immediately thinking "CODE RED!"

She unplugged everything in the house and went to work, and we hd the plan for me to come home ASAP to investigate.

According to Worth Insurance, on average house fires cause 2,620 civilian deaths each year. I couldn't help but think that had to find the cause of the smell or my family and I would join this number.

I walked in our bedroom and cut on the lights. All of a sudden I smell the burning again!

I happened to look up and what do I see??.......

A sanitary napkin in the bowl of our ceiling fan that was thrown up there by our toddlers.

Luckily, we didn't have a real fire on our hands but now I know to  watch the kids more closely and inspect our utilities around the house because you never know what the kids left that could cause a fire.
