Alabama was the first state to hold a Mardi Gras celebration. I know when people think of Mardi Gras celebrations, Alabama is not their first thought. The first Mardi Gras celebration happened in Mobile in 1703, that is 15 years before New Orleans decided to become Mardi Gras central. Here’s an additional fun fact when it comes to Mardi Gras in Mobile. In the 1970s, MoonPies became the chosen snack to toss from a float. Before that change, Cracker Jack boxes were tossed from floats to the residents of Mobile.

The oldest baseball stadium is located in Birmingham. Rickwood Field opened in 1910 and is still in use today. Yet when you search the oldest ballpark, we get no credit. Fenway gets that credit and they opened in 1912, which is 2 years after Rickwood was opened. I think the internet needs to correct that fact.

Alabama was the first state to have an Official Alcoholic State Drink! Yes, we paved the way as far as state drinks are concerned. In 2004 Alabama Legislature named Conecuh Ridge Whiskey as our state's official drink. Only one state has followed us in this decision, 13 years after we raised our glasses.
