Former Alabama basketball star Herb Jones, a Greensboro, Alabama native, has secured a big-time pay raise with the New Orleans Pelicans.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Herb Jones and the New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to a three-year, $68 million extension. Jones is tied to the Pelicans for the next five years and is slated to make $97 million.

 

Jones also has a player option for the 2029-30 NBA season. The Pelicans selected him with the 35th pick in the second round of the 2021 NBA draft out of the University of Alabama, and since then, Jones has become a lockdown defender for New Orleans.

 

Since joining the Pelicans, Jones has been named to the 2021-22 NBA All-Rookie Second Team and the 2023-24 All-NBA Defensive Team. In his four years with New Orleans, Jones has played in 240 career games, averaging 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and 36.6 percent from three-point range. According to StatMuse, Jones has a career defensive rating of 112.7.

 

Jones spent four seasons at the University of Alabama, being recruited by Avery Johnson before helping usher in the Nate Oats era of Alabama basketball. During his four years with the Crimson Tide, Jones averaged 7.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.1 percent from the floor and 28.8 percent from three-point range. Jones helped Alabama secure the SEC regular season and SEC Tournament championships during the 2020-21 men's basketball season.

 

Jones secured numerous accolades during his time at Alabama.
