As Southern state have removed Confederate flags from their state buildings, the battle emblem flies high in defiance in Mississippi.

On Saturday, prominent Mississippi natives such as Morgan Freeman, John Grisham, and Jimmy Buffett advertised in The Clarion-Ledger asking that the symbol be removed from the flag's upper left corner.

The ad says: "It is simply not fair, or honorable, to ask black Mississippians to attend schools, compete in athletic events, work in the public sector, serve in the National Guard, and go about their normal lives with a state flag that glorifies a war fought to keep their ancestors enslaved.
