More than a dozen community agencies were in attendance offering free resources for Stillman students and West End residents. Organizations in attendance included the Alabama Department of Public Health, Whatley Health Services, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of West Alabama, Walgreen's and more.

The event featured the Stillman College Blue Pride Marching Band, the Stillman College Choir, and Denzel Davis' mother Camelia Tyre.

The health fair honored Denzel Davis, a former Stillman student who passed away on Oct. 28, 2018, after contracting viral bronchitis. Davis did not know just how sick he was and didn't seek medical attention because he didn't have insurance.

The health fair is held to honor Davis but also to encourage individuals to go to the doctor and break down barriers for minorities and low-income households.

“The disparity between African Americans and how health issues affect other populations is significant,” said Tomalisa Washington, director of Student Development at Stillman College and organizer of the health fair. “And, in addition to issues of access, we have a population that is very suspicious of health care professionals. So, the more we can expose our students and community to healthcare specialists is important, especially for early detection and preventive medicine.”
