Delta Causes Alabamians to Stay Weather Aware Saturday

According to the National Weather Service Birmingham Facebook page.  They provided an update today at 12:35 pm.

Timing is Saturday from Noon to 11 pm.

Part of our listening areas are in the slight risk area. This means there is the potential for tornadoes and damaging winds up to 60 mph. The other part of the area is the marginal risk area which includes the slight risk area threat but are less likely.

* Upgrade to Slight Risk across the south
* Slight adjustment to timing

"Severe threat has increased for portions of the area due to projected higher instability. Have multiple ways to receive warnings!"

Right now, the entire state of Alabama is under a marginal risk for severe weather on Saturday. We will keep you posted on this information.

Residents of parts of Louisiana are preparing for Hurricane Delta. It is projected to arrive to Southwestern Louisiana later today. Delta brings the threat of isolated tornadoes, flooding rain, destructive winds, and dangerous storm surge to those areas.

Right now, Hurricane Delta is a major hurricane at a category level 3. As it gets closer to the Gulf Coast, it is projected to be a category 2 hurricane. After landfall, Delta will move inland into the lower Mississippi Valley.

Delta is still on track to affect areas that Hurricane Laura damaged in August. The system is moving at 12 miles per hour towards the north and will take a north-northwestward motion by this evening.

Possible Central Alabama Impacts

Our main window to have the potential impacts from Delta will be on Saturday. The National Weather Service noted that “The National Hurricane Center forecast track for Delta, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across Central Alabama on Saturday, and generally 1 PM through 11 PM. Primary threats include damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and brief tornadoes.”

The wind gusts potential for Saturday range from 20-30 mph.

Possible rainfall amounts will range between 2 to 3 inches for areas west of I-65. There is the possibility of showers and thunderstorms. Chance of precipitation:

Friday and Friday Night – 70%

Saturday – 90%

Saturday Night – 80%

Sunday – 60%

Sunday Night – 20%
