Could an Ice Storm Be Headed to Alabama?
The big question right now, could an ice storm be headed to Alabama? The quick answer, there is the potential for that to happen. Please know that Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa will be monitoring this weather situation multiple times a day as we get closer to the possibility of a winter weather event.
IMMEDIATE INFORMATION
Temperatures today will be in the 40s for North and Central Alabama. For the southern counties, they will be in the 50s. The Tennessee Valley will be in the 30s.
National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of Lamar, Marion, and Winston Counties. The information notes that “freezing rain may create a light glaze of ice on bridges and elevated surfaces this morning through 9 AM this morning in portions of northern Lamar, Marion, and Winston.”
Also, please know that this freezing rain potential could also “occur overnight tonight into Saturday morning for portions of Lamar, Marion, and Winston Counties. Accumulations generally less than 0.05 inches are possible.”
IMPORTANT
I need you to know that this information is evolving and could change as we get closer to the predicted event day and time. Any type of winter weather scenario in the Deep South is tough to predict. This means check back often as we will update you with current weather information.
SATURDAY
Freezing temperatures for the northwest corner of Alabama. (See above information on Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of Lamar, Marion, and Winston Counties).
James Spann, ABC 33/40 and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, shared that “widespread rain is likely during the morning, slowly tapering off by mid to late afternoon. Sunday will be mostly cloudy and generally dry. Temperatures over the weekend will be very similar to what we are experiencing today.”
SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY
James Spann also shared his insight on Sunday night into Monday with us as well. “Precipitation will move into Alabama Sunday night, and this could be in the form of freezing rain for parts of North and West Alabama, possibly creating some travel impact, mainly north of I-59 (north of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Gadsden).
The thoughts on the timing (as of right now) “while there could be a brief break Monday, a more significant round of precipitation comes later Monday into Monday night. Thermal values suggest freezing rain will be possible again north of I-59. Some ice accumulation is very possible, and travel could be impacted, but it remains a little too early for a specific forecast involving the placement and timing of the primary freezing rain threat.”
