A 52-year-old Cottondale man died early Friday morning after being struck by a car as he crossed McFarland Boulevard on foot.

Lt. Teena Richardson, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said Wendell Hallman was crossing the street in the 3500 block of East McFarland Boulevard, near Tuscaloosa's ABC store, when he was struck by a vehicle around 12:55 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle told police he attempted to avoid Hallman, but was unable to.

A witness corroborated the driver's account, tell investigators that Hallman was staggering across the road and he had narrowly avoided striking Hallman with his own car just moments prior to the accident.

Richardson said medical personnel rushed to offer aid, but Hallman succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
