In a world where it seems that most are becoming acclimated to diversity and accepting the differences of others, there is still some progress to be made.

An example comes by way of a woman who says she was sent home by her employer, who identified her hairdo as unprofessional.

At first glance, it appears that Layton's hair is slicked back into a ponytail. However, a closer look shows that her hair is actually pulled back and covered by a wrap. Women of various cultures cover their hair for a number of reasons. Some are religious, others are for fashion, and even more demonstrate modesty.

While the covering of one's hair to demonstrate modesty could be a result of her spiritual convictions, it is also commonplace today for those who have hair which requires more maintenance than others. To cover one's hair in such a fashion is oftentimes more appropriate and becoming than that which is under it.

What's sad, though, is that there appears to be no concession for cultural differences. Would a woman in a hijab be sent home? Would she even be hired? If the same rules apply, surely her adornment would be seen as "unprofessional." Would a Sikh woman be forced to remove her turban? If the turban's purpose is to protect the hair and keep it clean, why isn't a Black woman's protection as accepted?

Crazy how mainstream society accepts the cultural differences of immigrants and their descendants but attempts to force those they brought here to adapt to their own set of rules and to adhere to what they deem as appropriate.

Ms. Layton, you don't have to go back to that job. There are a number of other day cares who celebrate your willingness to work and who will hire you. And if you were just working that job to make ends meet until you do what you really want, let us know what that is so we can make it happen.
