Who Told You Jesus Was Boring? The Abundant Life of Faith

For many, the idea of following Jesus conjures images of strict rules, solemn faces, and a life drained of fun. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Jesus didn’t call people into a boring existence—He invited them into abundant life (John 10:10). A life marked by purpose, passion, freedom, and deep joy.

Reframing the Narrative

Maybe the real issue isn’t that God’s way is dull. Maybe we’ve been chasing joy in the wrong places—through achievements, entertainment, or fleeting pleasure—only to be left feeling empty.

Ecclesiastes 2:10–11 shows this vividly. Solomon writes,

“I denied myself nothing my eyes desired… yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done… everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

Solomon had it all—wealth, wisdom, power—and still found it lacking. That’s the story of many people today. But Jesus offers something more.

Jesus: The Source of True Life

When Jesus said in John 10:10,

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,”
He wasn’t promising ease or luxury. He was offering a deeper, richer way to live.

Look at the lives Jesus touched:

  • Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1–10) was a greedy tax collector. One encounter with Jesus changed him into a generous, transformed man.
  • The Samaritan woman (John 4) had spent her life looking for fulfillment in relationships. Jesus met her at the well and offered her living water—a kind of spiritual refreshment the world couldn’t offer.
  • Peter, a rough fisherman, became a bold preacher after following Jesus (Matthew 4:18–20).

None of these people lived boring lives after meeting Christ—they were called into adventures that changed history.

Following Jesus Is a Radical Invitation

Jesus called His followers to leave everything behind and follow Him (Luke 5:27–28). He healed the sick, calmed storms, walked on water, and partied with outcasts (Luke 5:29). He brought life wherever He went—and He still does.

Think about the joy of community described in Acts 2:46–47,

“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts… and the Lord added to their number daily.”

This is what life with Jesus looks like: joyful, communal, and full of purpose.

A Daily Adventure

Faith isn’t about performing or pretending. It’s about walking with the God who created joy. It’s about:

  • Purpose in your work and relationships (Colossians 3:23)
  • Peace in the middle of chaos (Philippians 4:7)
  • Courage to live differently (Romans 12:2)
  • Hope that anchors you, even in hard times (Hebrews 6:19)

So, Who Told You Jesus Was Boring?

Maybe they never truly encountered Him.

Real faith doesn’t confine you—it frees you. Jesus isn’t a taskmaster; He’s a life-giver. He doesn’t offer rules without reason—He offers relationship. A vibrant, daily, grace-filled walk with the Savior of the world.

And in that walk, you’ll find something the world can’t replicate joy that lasts.

Scriptures to Reflect On:

  • John 10:10 – “I have come that they may have life…”
  • Psalm 16:11 – “In your presence there is fullness of joy…”
  • Matthew 11:28–30 – “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

Want abundant life? Don’t settle for the world’s version. Start walking with the One who created life itself. You’ll find it’s anything but boring.
