The University of Alabama football team took part in its first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The scrimmage lasted roughly 135 plays and was just over two hours under overcast skies with short, heavy rainstorm early in the scrimmage. The temperatures for the day hung in the 80s.

"If I was going to give an overall assessment,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I’d say the first teams executed fairly well and I think after that, we’ve got a lot of guys that really need to work hard on having a better feeling about the expectation of the kind of effort, the kind of toughness, the kind of responsibility you have to have to actually know how to do your job on a consistent basis and do it enough that you have confidence in what you’re supposed to do, how you’re supposed to do it the way it needs to get done so you have the best chance to be successful so we’re a work in progress when it comes to that.”

The Crimson Tide offense was hampered by the early rains but progressed well as the day dried out. The defense had its moments as well throughout the scrimmage.

"This is an indication of where we are," Saban said. “It gives us a much better barometer of things we need to improve on to get better, each guy individually, as well as each unit, as well as our team. We had some guys who did really, really well out there today.”

The scrimmage was Alabama's first of the fall in preparation for the season opener against No. 17 Southern California in Arlington, Texas, for the AdvoCare Classic. The game between the Crimson Tide and Trojans is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff inside AT&T Stadium on ABC with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Sam Ponder on the call. The team will have its first off day of the fall on Sunday before getting back for its third and final two-a-day session of Fall Camp on Monday.
