‘Independence Day 2′ Has Been Pushed to 2016
2015 is looking like the Nerd singularity, when we'll see such films as 'The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron,' 'Jurassic World,' 'The Fantastic Four,' 'Batman Vs. Superman,' 'Terminator 5,' 'Ant-Man,' the new James Bond, 'Warcraft' and 'Star Wars: Episode 7' all hitting the big screen. But one big title has decided to hold off until 2016: 'Independence Day 2.'
Considering that Fox just moved 'Fantastic Four' into the summer season earlier today, this shouldn't be all that surprising, as the studio how has 'Four,' the big screen version of 'Assassin's Creed' starring Michael Fassbender, the animated film 'B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations,' the Melissa McCarthy comedy 'Susan Cooper' and the Tim Burton film 'Peregrine's Home for Peculiars' already slated for that summer. On top of which, we've only heard casting rumors about 'ID4 2,' where many of the big 2015 films have already filled their casts (mostly because they're sequels), or are starting to get those pieces into place.
This move would also position the sequel to come out for the twentieth anniversary of the original film, which hit the big screen in 1996. And though that means we're getting a sequel long after the original left its dent in pop culture, this doesn't feel as craven as -- say -- 'Ghostbusters 3.' Whether this was done to accommodate anyone's schedule (we're looking at you, Will Smith) is unknown. 'Independence Day 2' is now scheduled for on July 1, 2016
