A 19-year-old pedestrian died Saturday after she was struck by a vehicle in Tuscaloosa hours before the Alabama-LSU football game kicked off in one of at least three fatal accidents in the area this weekend.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said the 19-year-old from Tallapoosa County was crossing Jack Warner Parkway near the city's River Market when she was struck by a vehicle that was traveling west.

The driver was a 40-year-old woman from Tuscaloosa, Taylor said, and she stopped and spoke with officers and paramedics after the collision.

Taylor said the victim, who TPD has not publicly identified, was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center here in Tuscaloosa, but did not survive her injuries.

The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

Taylor did not immediately release the identity of the victim and said members of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit responded and are conducting a follow-up investigation.

The Violent Crimes Unit is a team comprised of detectives from the Tuscaloosa, Northport, and University of Alabama Police Departments and the County Sheriff's Office. They forego jurisdictional boundaries and investigate almost all local deaths that occur outside of a hospital setting, as well as assault cases and sex crimes. Their involvement in a death case does not necessarily indicate suspicion of foul play.
