City leaders are looking for volunteers -- especially those with boats! -- to remove trash and debris from Lake Tuscaloosa next month, cleaning up both the primary source of drinking water for residents of Tuscaloosa and one of its top outdoor attractions.

The City is seeking volunteers for the April 15th cleanup, particularly those with boats -- with nearly 180 miles of shoreline, Lake Tuscaloosa is difficult to effectively clean from land.

Anyone without their own vessel will be assigned to a municipal boat or a shoreline crew.

The event will kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 15th, and aim to wrap up by 1 p.m.

In a Thursday press release announcing the cleanup, the city said the first 150 volunteers will be given a free T-shirt, breakfast and lunch.

"Behind me is 40 billion gallons of water that can provide our community up to 200 million gallons a day of treated water," Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said in a video shot at the Lake. "This not only ensures a high quality of life, it ensures that future generations can continue to call Tuscaloosa home, but it's very important we continue to protect this valuable resource."

Volunteers are encouraged to check in at the Rock Quarry Boat Landing not far from the Lake Tuscaloosa Dam -- find more details about the event and specific directions here.
