Temperatures are dropping in the state of Alabama and many are searching for ways to stay warm.

Inside your home, of course, you can use your heating system, and even lighting candles around the house will help create some form of warmer air indoors.

What about whenever you leave home?

Going outside of course layering up is something that I had to learn how to do.

Being from Florida, it wasn't until this year that I realized I wasn't properly layering myself during the winter months.

For the past two years, I've gotten sick on almost the same day in  November. I'm sure my busy schedule and lack of rest contributed to it, but I recently found out it was mostly my lack of layers.

I love wearing hoodies and I used to just wear a tank top and a hoodie even on days when the temperature would reach the low 30s. This year, I actually started layering up and I not only felt warmer but have yet to get sick during the winter months.

One thing my parents always did before leaving the house when it got cold was warm up the car. You just go outside crank up the car, cut the heat on let the car warm up for a little bit.

Although they never quite explained why they did it, I just chalked it up to you wanting the heat to get really warm before we got in the car. After about 10 minutes we'd head outside to a warm car and I get dropped off at school.

I'm sure plenty of Alabamians love to warm up their car, my wife included.

Is it illegal?

I recall my friend Mary K doing an article saying about it. It stated states like Arizona, Colorado, Georgia Hawaii. Texas and Virginia had laws against Idling your car but not Alabama.

I recently did some research and according to to adjust to Justia, Alabama code section 32-5A-50 says that:

"No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit to shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, effectively setting the brake thereon and when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway"

Okay, so now I'm confused. Is it legal or not?

Either way, I love jumping into a warm vehicle on a frigidly cold morning, and at home, I'll take my chances.

I may not leave my car and attend it for 40 or 30 minutes, but seven minutes could work.

Do you warm your vehicle on cold mornings?
